There will be detailed blog articles on the subject so for this page just a simple run down of the sub categories…if anyone is reading, if not hopefully Google will!
There is crossover between some sections, for example, you will find Adjustable and quick release mounts in 1 and 2 piece.
One piece – A mount ring that is s single unit. Good with heavy recoil as there is more grip. But will not fit tops with magazines and mostly too long to fit compact scopes.
2 piece – 2 separate rings. More flexibility on placement that 1 piece. Modern designs also pretty good on recoil. Check out BKL and Sportsmatch for budget but excellent.
Extended – Can be 1 or 2 piece. One or both mounts is extended allowing for more flexible scope back or forward placement where eye position is difficult with straight mounts or there is an obstruction to clear
Cantilever – Similar to extended but generally 1 piece - the mount "cantilevers" forward over the barrel. This design pushes the scope further forward, creating more room for adjusting eye relief
Adjustable – The saviour of scope elevation running out and also helpful for zero tweaks. Can simply be height adjustable to make it possible to raise the scope a little if the scope objective may otherwise rest on the gun. More are Elevation adjustable, allowing extra MOA to be applied without adjusting the scope elevation so much which is not a good thing to do. Some models also windage (left right) adjustable which again saves scope click range and is an alternate way to adjust zero.
Quick Release - 1 or 2 pc. Have a lever that allows the mount to be put on and taken off in seconds. Very useful if you need to switch scopes as the scope and mounts are taken off as a unit which preserves zero settings .
Special receivers – Not all guns have the common dovetail or weaver/picatinny bases. While adapters are available mostly to give a picatinny base, it may not always be practical or desired. Thus there are many special mounts for makes like Tikka, Sako, Ruger, CZ and so on
Parts – mainly top ring caps for Hawke mounts to give a picatinny top for fitting accessories like torches and lasers onto. Some handy Hawke MOA inserts too that allow for cheap MOA adjustment on Hawke models.
