What are extended mounts?
Extended scope mount rings are usually a 2 piece design, with an extended base that moves one or both rings further forward along the rail. They are available in dovetail and picatinny rail variants.
This is as opposed to Cantilever mounts which are generally one piece but for the same purpose and mostly for picatinny base.
Typically choice between Extended and Cantilever is the same as choosing between 1 and 2 piece mounts.
There is some crossover in products in category, just an admin thing! Extended = 2 piece. Cantilever = an extended 1 piece mount.
Why and why do you use extended mounts?
Extended scope mounts are for when you want to move the scope further forward or backward more than a standard mount would allow.
This may be to adjust eye relief, which is the distance from your eye to the ocular lens of the scope that allows for a full field of view.
Or it may also be because you need the scope to clear an obstruction such as a magazine or allow for cocking bolt operation.
Such situations can arise on rifles where the rail is shorter, or where the scope’s design requires extra forward positioning, foe example, with a Scout scope where forward position is normally needed or many night vision sights which are much shorter than regular scopes and so need to be brought backwards.
