Night vision technology comes in several types, each with different mechanisms for enhancing vision in low-light or no-light conditions.

Here are the main types:

  1. Image Intensification - Amplifies existing light (e.g., moonlight or starlight) to create a visible image. For a long time this was the most common type of night vision and is used in devices like night vision goggles. But now the majority of night vision scopes are digital, thermal or fusion.

  2. Thermal Imaging - Thermal imaging detects the heat emitted by objects (infrared radiation) rather than relying on light. This technology produces an image based on temperature differences in a scene.
  1. Infrared Illumination (Active Night Vision) - uses an infrared light source (invisible to the eye) to illuminate the scene. The infrared light bounces off objects, and a sensor captures the reflected light, creating a visible image.

  2. Digital Night Vision - converts ambient light into a digital signal and displays the image on a screen. It combines some features of image intensification and infrared illumination.

  3. Fusion Night Vision - combines both thermal imaging and image intensification to produce an image that highlights both visible and infrared details. This type of night vision allows for better situational awareness by merging data from both technologies.
