Spotting scopes are high-powered, portable optical telescopes designed maily for observing objects on land.
Spotting scopes are popular for birdwatching, hunting, target shooting, and nature observation.
Compared to binoculars spotting scopes provide more magnification and stability than binoculars but are more compact and portable than astronomical telescopes as well as being of use at ranges where astro telescopes would be impractical.
Key features of spotting scopes:
- Magnification: Common ranges from 15x to 60x or higher, allowing detailed observation at long distances.
- Objective Lens Size: Larger lenses mostly range between 50mm and 100mm. They gather more light, providing clearer images in low-light conditions than binoculars.
- Eyepiece: Some have fixed eyepieces, while others feature interchangeable or zoom eyepieces for adjustable magnification.
- Prism Type: Roof or Porro prisms are used to ensure correct image orientation.
- Angled or Straight Design: Spotting scopes come in two designs—angled (the eyepiece is at an angle to the barrel) or straight (the eyepiece is in line with the barrel).
They are often mounted on tripods to ensure stability and clear images.
