Red dot magnifiers are designed to solve the problem of dot/reflex sights not being magnified which reduces their use for longer ranges. Fitting a compatible magnifier improves flexibility. Often flip to side to allow them to be used for longer range shots then flipped over to one side when the normal close range 1x is needed.

They do tend to be rather manufacturer specific in order to match up (co-witness) with the dot sight so make sure the model is compaitible. Match ups can also often be got by using a riser block.
